1 – Day Packages

Amahlati Excursions can take you to the following must see and do activities when you are in Grahamstown, the centre of Frontier Country:
1. Addo Elephant National Park: The Park is situated about 1 hour from Grahamstown and is home to over 450 elephants. Cape buffalo, black rhino, bushbuck, eland, red hartebeest, kudu, ostrich, warthog, duiker, cape grysbok and zebra may also been seen. Lions have been introduced to the Park in 2005. Over 185 species of birds have been identified.
2. Lion Safari: Explore the oldest private game reserve in the Eastern Cape. Guaranteed sightings of the free roaming lions. Other game that may be sighted includes giraffe, white rhino, hippo and a number of different antelope species.
3. Bushman Sands: Come and see how Alicedale has been brought to life since the start of Bushman Sands. This community project has an 18 hole Gary Player design golf course and a luxury spa. Game drives are available where you can spot numerous antelope as well as cheetah's and rhino. Boat rides can also be arranged on the New Years Dam that is home to hippo and numerous bird species. The tour includes a visit to the renown Jan Paul Barnard Mohair factory.
4. Historical Grahamstown and Rini Township: Discover Grahamstown's fascinating past and visit various historical sites and museums. This tour also includes a visit to the township where you can experience Xhosa customs and culture.
5. Bushman Rock Art: Minutes away from Grahamstown you can experience rock art, relict & artifacs that gives clues to the myriad of animals and people that have moved through this place. Tours available in the morning and afternoon. We recommend the morning tour to view rock art.
6. Day trip to Port Elizabeth: Situated just over 1 hour's drive from Grahamstown is Port Elizabeth also known as "the friendly city". The day is devoted to shopping and a historical tour of the city. We move between beachfront markets, shopping arcades and curio shops where you can purchase true Africa memorabilia. The historical tour covers various historical sites.
7. Day trip to Kenton-on-Sea, Port Alfred & Bathurst: Kenton and Port Afred both boasts beautiful golden beaches that stretch forever! At Kenton you can choose to take a horse ride on the beach or just take a leisurely stroll along the beach. In Port Alfred you can do some shopping before we depart for Bathurst - home to the world's biggest pineapple! If time allows us we can stop at the country's oldest pub, "The Pig and Whistle" before we head home.
The abovementioned day-trips all include transport, entrance fee, lunch or dinner and game drives where applicable. The tours depart from Grahamstown, either in the morning or afternoon, depending on your choice of tour. Pickups from your place of accommodation in Grahamstown.
A special tour price is given for the following combination packages:
1) Addo Elephant Park & the Lion Safari.
This tour departs Grahamstown at 08h00 returns to Grahamstown between 22h00 - 23h00. Transport, entrance fees, lunch and dinner is included.
Tour 1: Addo Elephant Park & Lion Safari stay over, 1 Night only. Return after breakfast.
Maximum of 4 people
Depart Grahamstown at 08h00 and leave for Addo Elephant National Park. Addo Elephant National Park is home to over 450 elephants. Cape buffalo, black rhino, bushbuck, eland, red hartebeest, kudu, ostrich, warthog, duiker, greybok and zebra may also been seen. Lions have been introduced to the Park in 2005 and over 185 species of birds have been identified. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the Park.
After lunch we depart to the oldest private game reserve in the Eastern Cape for guaranteed sightings of their free roaming lions. Other game that may be sighted includes giraffe, white rhino, hippo and a number of different antelope species. Dinner included. Overnight accommodation in a close by guesthouse. Depart for Grahamstown after breakfast.
This one night stay over may be combined with the overland packages below, to extend your excursion.
Overland Packages
Amahlati Excursions can take you on overland packages to various destinations to enjoy the following must see and do activities when you are in the respective areas.
Tour 2: The Cape Midlands and Camdeboo Meander, 3 Nights and 4 Days.
Maximum of 4 people
Depart Grahamstown and head for the Mountain Zebra Park, situated 27km west of Cradock. The Park is home to the protected Cape Mountain Zebra, the smallest of the Zebra species in South Africa. The Park boasts many other antelope species, an abundant bird life and many indigenous trees such as the sweet-thorn and wild olive.

After breakfast we depart for Nieu-Bethesda. The town’s most famous feature is the Owl House, home to many sculptured figures of owls done by the eccentric Helen Martins. She lived there for most of her life in search of ‘light and brightness’. Owls fascinated her. She decorated the walls, doors, ceilings and even some furniture with various colours of ground glass and filled the rooms with mirrors to reflect the light from strategically positioned candles and lamps. The movie ‘The Road to Mecca’ starring Cathy Bates and S.A. dramatist Athol Fugard was filmed here. In the afternoon we depart for Graaff-Reinet.
Overnight in Graaff-Reinet known to be the 4th oldest town in the country.
The next morning, after breakfast take a guided tour of the town’s Museums and National Monuments. After lunch we move on to the breathtaking ‘Valley of Desolation’. The main feature of the valley is a series of precariously balanced dolerite columns, which rise as much as 120m above the valley floor. These rock pillars have withstood 200 million years of erosion by wind and water better than the boulders on the valley floor.
Overnight in Graaff-Reinet.
The next morning, after breakfast the tour returns to Grahamstown.
Tour 3: The Klein Karoo Tour, 5 Nights and 6 Days.

This tour travels through the Langkloof from Grahamstown to Mossel Bay. On route a person notices the diverse landscape, which varies from coastal bushveld to the vast dry Karoo.
Our first stop is the small town of Joubertina where we will enjoy lunch. We travel further to the town of De Rust where we will do a walkabout of the small town. Late afternoon we will depart for Prince Albert and travel thought the famous Meiringspoort with its waterfall, a beautiful gorge, which links the Klein Karoo and the Great Karoo. If time allows us, we will stop at a local cellar for wine tasting. A pre-dinner walkabout tour of the town will include historic site visits and a few ghost tales.
Overnight in Prince Albert.
After an early morning breakfast, we visit a working olive farm for an olive tour. On the tour you will see the olive groves, how the fruit is processed. You will be able to taste the oil and olives and buy your supplies direct from the farm.
Late morning we will depart Prince Albert for Oudtshoorn via the internationally known Swartberg Pass. The Swartberg Pass is approximately 25 km long and was completed by engineering genius Thomas Bain in 1888 and is recognised as one of the finest in the world. The drive along the gravel road reveals geological and botanical wonders and offers spectacular views.
After lunch we will visit the world renowned Cango Caves, with its unique limestone stalactites and stalagmites towers. These formations started several million years ago from rainwater seeping through the mountain into the cave. The caves go in for over 5km with big chambers being connected by tunnels and passages.
After the caves, we will visit Cheetahland, a wildlife research Centre, where one can view crocodiles, alligators and some of the big cats such as lion, tiger, puma, jaguar and cheetahs. Visitors are allowed to enter the enclosure and stroke a cheetah under the watchful eye of a guide and receive a certificate for bravery!
Overnight in Oudtshoorn.
After breakfast we will visit the High Gate Ostrich Show Farm, one of the oldest ostrich show farms in the country, and regarded as one of the top tourist attractions in South Africa. Highlights of the tour include, feeding ostriches by hand and the life of an ostrich and its breeding cycle. The chicks are very cute! Visit their nests and stand on the eggs to see how strong they are. The more adventurous tourist can try to ride on the back of an ostrich.
Later we travel to Mossel Bay. We begin our journey into Mossel Bay’s past at the Diaz Museum Complex. You may board a life-size replica of Dias’ ship; send a post card from the famous 500 year old Post Office Tree; explore the fascinating world of the Shell Museum and the Aquarium; explore Maritime and local history.
Overnight in Mossel Bay.
After breakfast we will take a boat cruise to Seal Island to view the seal population of about 2000 seals. We will stop at Mossel Bay’s biggest flea market and view the many local crafts. We will also visit a Bushman’s Cave at the Point. The afternoon will be free for optional activities such as shark cage diving, whale watching, abseiling, sea kayaking, a beach stroll or shopping. Please note that the optional activities are extra and not included in the tour price.
Overnight in Mossel Bay.
After breakfast we depart for George, the heart of the Southern Cape. George is spectacularly located on a picturesque coastal plateau between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean. Mid morning we take an excursion on a Power Van, on rail into the Quteniqua Mountains. Experience the forest, waterfalls, tunnels, fynbos, proteas, bird and animal life. We will enjoy a picnic in the mountains.
In the afternoon we will depart for Tsitsikamma. The beautiful indigenous forest is home to birds, antelope and other wildlife, as well as the giant Outeniqua Yellowwood – one of the true monarchs of the world’s forests. We will stop and explore the big tree.
Next on the list of adventures is a tree top canopy tour where you get buckled up in a harness and you slide on a steel cable from one tree top to another. If time allows, adrenalin junkies can enjoy a 7 second, 180m free fall from Africa’s largest bridge, the Bloukrans Bridge. The bridge is formally recognised by Guinness World Records as being the Worlds Highest Commercial Bungy jump at a monstrous 216m high. The Bungy jump is also an optional extra and not included in the tour price.
Overnight in the Tsitsikamma National Park.
After breakfast we will do a short walking trail before we depart for Grahamstown. Estimated time of arrival to Grahamstown is between 16h00 – 17h00.
